DFA says Kavanaugh “represents a generational assault on justice, freedom, core democratic values”

Donald Trump just nominated right-wing ideologue Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Here's Democracy for America (DFA) Chair Jim Dean on Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh to the Court and DFA's vow to fight it:

"Donald Trump's decision to nominate a reactionary ideologue like Brett Kavanaugh and shift the balance of the U.S. Supreme Court even further right represents a generational assault on justice, freedom, and our country's core democratic values.

"If Brett Kavanaugh survives the confirmation process, he will rapidly advance a fringe right agenda on the court that will accelerate plutocratic control of our economy and politics, actively undermine the steps our country must take towards greater racial equity, and directly lead to the deaths of countless women with the dismantling of abortion rights.

"Democrats and so-called moderate Republicans in the U.S. Senate have a choice: Stand with the American people and fight for a Supreme Court that protects our Constitution's core progressive values or cave in to Donald Trump and own every single crushed dream, broken community, and lifeless body that results from the rulings issued by a Court with Kavanaugh's extreme-right vote.

"This fight won't be easy, but Democracy for America members are committed to doing anything and everything we can to make sure that Democrats and so-called moderate Republicans in the U.S. Senate make the right choice and reject Brett Kavanaugh. And, if they don't, we're committed to working even harder to hold them accountable for their complicity in enabling the nightmares to come." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Starting with events taking place across the country tomorrow, Democracy for America will be working with Indivisible and dozens of other national progressive groups to make sure the voices of the hundreds of thousands who oppose Kavanaugh are heard during the coming fight over the Court.

DFA backs Keith Ellison for Attorney General of Minnesota

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) formally endorsed Rep. Keith Ellison in his race for Attorney General of Minnesota.

DFA has been a long time ally of Ellison during his multiple campaigns for Congress and service as co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. DFA was also an early and fierce supporter of Ellison in his 2017 race for Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's support for Ellison in his race for Attorney General of Minnesota:

"As Attorney General, Keith Ellison will be the tireless champion for justice and the fearless fighter for working families that the people of Minnesota deserve.

"Democracy for America members are excited to support Keith Ellison in his race for Attorney General because, whether we needed a progressive fighter to lead the charge for expanding Social Security or directly confront Donald Trump's bigoted agenda, Keith has always been ready and eager to fight alongside the grassroots for lasting progressive change.

"Keith Ellison has also repeatedly prioritized the fight for racial, social, and economic justice far above what might be personally or politically expedient. Keith Ellison walks the walk. It shows in his record, his activism, and the young people across the country whom he has mentored and helped become the solution to our country's challenges." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA endorses Kara Eastman for Congress in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Kara Eastman in her race to represent Nebraska's 2nd in the U.S. House.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Kara Eastman's race for Congress:

"Kara Eastman's grassroots victory in this spring's primary not only inspired progressives in Nebraska and throughout the country, it ensured that the voters of Omaha have a pragmatic problem-solver in the race for Congress who is committed to fighting for big, bold inclusive populist ideas that put people first.

"Whether she was fighting to protect the health of Nebraskan children at the Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance or working to strengthen non-discrimination protections as Vice Chair of the Metropolitan Community College's Board of Governors, Kara Eastman has stood up and fought to deliver progressive change while welcoming every member of the community to a seat at the table.

"Democracy for America members are excited to endorse Kara Eastman in her race for Congress because we know she's dedicated to waging a battle for Congress rooted in Nebraska's progressive values while fighting for Medicare for All, common-sense gun reform, racial justice, and a $15 an hour minimum wage." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has 5,140 members in the state of Nebraska and more than one million members nationwide.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Kara Eastman -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Kara Eastman on receiving DFA's endorsement in her race for Congress:

"I am proud to have the support of Democracy for America. This organization truly understands the importance of getting money out of politics and empowering grassroots movements. I refuse to accept corporate PAC money because I believe that people are more important than money. I am looking forward to representing Nebraska's families instead of corporations and special interests." -- Kara Eastman

Kara Eastman is the President and CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors for Metropolitan Community College, a mother, and a champion for community change. At the Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, Eastman has raised over $13 million to help support green, safe, and healthy housing in her community, while at Metropolitan Community College she's worked to strengthen non-discrimination policies and helped develop contractor training programs that have created jobs in and around Omaha. A life-long Democrat, in Congress, Eastman is committed to fearlessly taking on the powerful interests who dominate our politics and lead the fight for an inclusive, populist progressive response to the challenges posed by healthcare, education, and climate change.

Following Kennedy retirement, DFA pushes Senate Dems to mercilessly fight Trump’s SCOTUS nomination

This afternoon, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court, potentially handing Donald Trump another opportunity to nominate a right-wing zealot.

Democracy for America issued the following public statement to U.S. Senate Democrats following Justice Kennedy's resignation:

"At the opening of one of the most important fights for a U.S. Supreme Court seat in a generation, we want to make one thing very clear:

"Voters all across the is country expect Senate Democrats to do everything in their power to reject whatever anti-choice, pro-corporate, enabler of bigotry and hate Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell attempt to force onto the U.S. Supreme Court to replace Justice Kennedy.

"Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans didn't spend a single moment worrying about waging an unprecedented, year-long war of all-out partisan obstruction against President Obama's nomination of a milquetoast moderate to the Court. Senate Democrats' opposition to whatever neo-fascist, right-wing ideologue the Federalist Society tells Trump to push through before the midterms deserves even less concern.

"Senate Republicans deserve precisely the same level of 'assistance' they offered President Obama and Senate Democrats after Justice Scalia's death. If Senate Democrats deliver that kind of unwavering fight, they can rest assured knowing that the voters and activists who believe in justice and freedom will have their back every step of the way." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

JANUS: While SCOTUS “once again reveals itself to be tool” of right, DFA finds hope in Ocasio-Cortez

Democracy for America's statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's Janus ruling and its decision to advance Republican assaults on union rights:

"Following yesterday's partisan 5-4 decisions on Trump's Muslim Ban and fake abortion clinics, the U.S. Supreme Court has once again revealed itself to be a tool of the fringe-right conservatives in Congress and the corporations, billionaires, and millionaires who control every single breath they take.

From the very start Janus was a calculated, political attack orchestrated by right-wing corporate interests to aid the destruction of unions, one of the few institutions in America working people have to take on the powerful corporations who dominate their lives. Rather than standing up for the interests of working people, in a nakedly partisan ruling determined by a U.S. Supreme Court seat stolen by Mitch McConnell and his Senate cronies, a bare conservative majority gave their wealthy and powerful patrons exactly what they wanted.

"While this loss and the assault on workers' rights it represents is real, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's shocking victory in New York's 14th Congressional District last night should give progressives hope. While one Congressional district won't change the composition of a Supreme Court controlled by a stolen seat, Ocasio-Cortez's victory reminds us that a new generation of inclusive populist leaders is on the march. While the far-right and their corporate masters won today, a path to the real progressive change our country needs still exists through the ballot box in 2018 and beyond. It's our duty to seize it." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Tell the Senate: No Justice Kennedy replacement before the midterm elections

Justice Anthony Kennedy just announced his retirement, meaning Donald Trump will be able to nominate his replacement. This will be catastrophic for women's rights, racial justice, economic equality and our most basic democratic processes.

It will give Trump, his plutocratic friends, and corporate special interests the ability to essentially do anything they want -- with legal cover.

Unless we fight back.

VICTORY: Ben Jealous delivers another major progressive victory in Maryland gubernatorial primary

Ben Jealous just won the Democratic primary for Governor of Maryland.

Even before he got in the race, Democracy for America (DFA ) publicly urged Jealous to run for Governor of Maryland and began mobilizing DFA members to pledge their support for him if he jumped in -- making today's primary victory particularly sweet for DFA's over 25,000 members in Maryland and more than one million members across the country.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Ben Jealous' victory in Maryland's Democratic gubernatorial primary:

"Ben Jealous' victory tonight is a tremendous win for the people of Maryland and progressives all across the country. Ben Jealous has spent his life fighting for racial and economic justice, and has never shied away from speaking truth to power. With Ben Jealous at the top of the ticket, Maryland Democrats have a leader who can motivate, inspire, and energize the base voters they need to win, and articulate a bold, inclusive populist vision for the state that brings the next generation of voters to the polls.

"A champion for thriving public education, Medicare for All, and robust criminal justice reform, as Governor, Ben Jealous will be a history-making, breath of fresh air in Maryland and a transformative leader on the national stage. Democracy for America members are proud to have supported Ben even before he got into this race, and we're looking forward to fighting alongside him to victory in November."  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA-endorsed Dana Balter wins NY-24 primary over DC Democratic insiders

In another stunning blow to DC Democratic insiders tonight, Democracy for America (DFA)-endorsed candidate Dana Balter just won the Democratic primary in New York's 24th Congressional District overcoming tremendous outside spending from the DCCC and others with the help of local and national grassroots progressive support.

DFA Jim Dean on Dana Balter's primary win over Democratic insiders and path to victory over her GOP opponent this Fall:

"In tonight's primary, Dana Balter defeated an anti-choice opponent being propped up by out-of-touch Washington insiders looking for someone to do their bidding in Congress, and that's precisely what she's going to do again this fall against Republican John Katko.

"All across New York's 24th District and the country, grassroots Democrats united behind Dana Balter because they know that to defeat a Republican who stands with Trump 91% of the time, we need a progressive leader who is willing to fight for the bold, inclusive populist reforms working families need 100% of the time.

"Democracy for America members were thrilled to stand with Dana Balter in this primary fight, and, as excited as we are about her victory over Democratic insiders tonight, we can't wait to fight alongside her to victory over her out-of-touch, right-wing opponent this November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ stunning primary upset victory in NY-14

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just delivered the primary upset of the year unseating Democratic House Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley in the NY-14 Democratic Primary.

Democracy for America proudly endorsed Ocasio-Cortez last week.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' primary stunner:

"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' stunning victory tonight is the clearest demonstration yet that when candidates welcome the New American majority of people of color and white progressive voters and run on a bold, visionary inclusive populist agenda tremendous change is possible.

"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the army of grassroots volunteers who delivered this jaw-dropping victory tonight didn't just win a difficult race, they won a primary campaign that most laughed at them for even waging. They earned every single vote, not by currying favors with the powerful, but by running an authentic, visionary campaign driven by bold ideas like Medicare-for-All, tuition-free college, robust criminal justice reform, and a federal jobs guarantee. They made it clear that Democrats need the courage to change.

"We couldn't be prouder to have backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in this primary and we hope her victory tonight sends a clear message to a Democratic Party that still needs to hear it: When Democratic candidates run campaigns rooted in inclusive populist priorities and centering the lived experiences of the New American Majority of people of color and white progressives, progressives win." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

“Joe Neguse’s win tonight is not only a huge win for voters in Colorado’s Second Congressional District, it’s a tremendous victory for everyone hungry for the rise of the next generation of progressive political leaders.

“The Second Congressional District has long been one of the core progressive power bases in Colorado, and with Joe Neguse representing them in Congress, they’ll have an unabashed leader for critical inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All, debt-free college, and robust protection of our public lands.

“We were excited to support Joe Neguse early in this race, and we looking forward to fighting alongside him in the U.S. Congress.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

June 26 Primaries: DFA watching MD Gubernatorial, U.S. House races in CO, MD, NY

Today, during 2018's last set of June primaries, Democracy for America (DFA) is paying particularly close attention to Ben Jealous' race for Governor in Maryland and three U.S. House races in Colorado and New York (including one key for Democrats hopes of retaking the chamber).

DFA-endorsed federal and local candidates running in competitive primary elections today include:

  • Ben Jealous (Governor - Maryland)
  • Joe Neguse (U.S. House - CO 2nd)
  • Emily Sirota (CO House - District 9)
  • Donna Edwards (Prince George's County (MD) Executive)
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (U.S. House - NY 14th)
  • Dana Balter (U.S. House - NY 24th)

DFA began supporting Ben Jealous' campaign for Governor of Maryland even before the former NAACP President joined the race. In early May 2017, the grassroots progressive organization publicly urged Jealous to run for Governor and began mobilizing DFA members to pledge their support for him if he jumped in -- making today's primary, more than a year later, particularly exciting for DFA's over 25,000 members in Maryland and more than one million members across the country.

In the races for U.S. House, DFA members are fired up for Dana Balter (NY-24) who, with the help of local grassroots Democratic group, is taking on a DCCC-backed opponent who previously publicly opposed abortion rights. Late last week, DFA backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) who has waged a strong challenge against an incumbent Democratic insider thanks to the support of grassroots progressives in her Queens and Bronx-based district and across the country. DFA members are also looking forward to seeing Joe Neguse (CO-2), who the organization endorsed last September, win his primary in and around the critical progressive stronghold of Boulder, CO.

Finally, DFA can't wait to see Donna Edwards' succeed in her primary for Prince George's County Executive and Emily Sirota's race for State House in Colorado. DFA has a long history as a fierce ally of Edwards throughout her time in Congress and her 2016 campaign for U.S. Senate in Maryland. Meanwhile, Sirota's race in CO will hopefully result in a victory for a local champion of inclusive populism.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those it's backed in today's primaries -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since 2004, DFA members have raised and spent more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

MUSLIM BAN: DFA says “sky-high” 2018 stakes “even higher” after SCOTUS ruling

Democracy for America's statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's incredibly disappointing ruling on the Trump Muslim Ban:

"The 5-4 passage of Donald Trump's Muslim Ban via a Supreme Court seat stolen by Mitch McConnell and his Senate cronies is an important reminder of the complicity of every single Republican member of Congress in the execution of Donald Trump's anti-American, hate-fueled agenda.

"After watching Donald Trump call white supremacists 'very fine people' and advance a policy directing the government to steal infants from the arms of refugee parents, the stakes of the 2018 election were already sky-high and, after today's ruling, got even higher. Donald Trump is succeeding in rotting core institutions of American government from the inside out. This fall's election may be one of our last chances to start the process of saving them." -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress in NY-14

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in her Democratic primary challenge of U.S. Representative Joe Crowley in New York's 14th Congressional District.

DFA has 119,998 members in the state of New York -- including more than 18,000 in and around New York's 14th district -- and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on why the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Ocasio-Cortez in her NY-14 race:

"Leadership in Washington shouldn't be determined by the number of corporate lobbyists you have on speed dial or the backroom deals you're willing to cut to get there, but by the boldness of your vision, the people you're committed to fight for, and the movements for change you're looking to help build.

"We're thrilled to endorse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez because of the people-powered, grassroots campaign she's building to challenge the entrenched interests in Washington and the bold, next generation of political leadership we believe she represents.

"Democracy for America members are fired up about the visionary movement Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is building in the Bronx and Queens, and we're excited to help them do everything they can to take it to Washington in the closing days of this primary." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

An educator, organizer, and third-generation Bronxite, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez personally understands the struggle of families in New York's 14th District and the inclusive populist solutions they need their member of Congress to fight for in Washington. In 2008, Ocasio-Cortez's father passed away in the midst of the emerging Great Recession forcing her to take on 18-hour days waiting tables and working multiple jobs to make sure her family could stay in their home. Those lived experiences have given Ocasio-Cortez a much deeper understanding of how policies impact our most vulnerable communities in ways that go beyond what most politicians see in the white papers that reach their desk. And, ultimately, its why she's running on a bold, inclusive populist agenda that includes Medicare for All, a Federal Jobs Guarantee, tuition-free college, and criminal justice reform that's inspiring the progressive grassroots in her district and across the country.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. DFA: No order Trump signs “erase[s] the psychological torment… moral shame” of family separation

Six weeks after it started taking children from their parents at the border, the Trump administration, in a sharp reversal of previous statements, has decided that it will sign an executive order to potentially indefinitely detain families in detention centers together.

DFA's chair Jim Dean replied to this response from the Trump administration with the following:

"Donald Trump's disgusting attempt to appear heroic by signing an executive order to temporarily end a policy of systematic child abuse that he pushed for, enabled, and excused is one of the vilest, politically-craven moves we've seen in the history of American politics.

"Let's be clear: Donald Trump and the administration he runs have spent nearly six weeks systematically ripping infants, toddlers, and children from the arms of asylum-seeking mothers and fathers fleeing violence and placing them in concentration camps and foster homes.

"No executive order Donald Trump signs can even begin to erase the psychological torment he's subjected these children and families to or the profound moral shame the actions of the Trump administration have brought to the country.

"Along with millions of Americans across the country, we refuse to be silent until every single infant, toddler, and child that Donald Trump's administration has ripped from their parents' arms is returned to them; all immigrants and families who are being needlessly and possibly illegally detained are freed; and the people who organized, perpetrated, and cheered on this immoral assault on human decency are brought to justice in the courts and at the ballot box." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

June 19 Primaries: DFA closely watching DC Council races

While celebrating Juneteenth with millions across the country today, Democracy for America (DFA) will also be closely watching the returns this evening in a number of key Democratic primaries taking place for the DC Council in Washington, D.C.

DFA-endorsed candidates running in Tuesday's Democratic primary in Washington, D.C. include:

  • Ed Lazere (DC Council Chair)
  • Jeremiah Lowery (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Elissa Silverman (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Brianne Nadeau (DC Council, Ward 1)
  • Charles Allen (DC Council, Ward 6)

A long-time supporter of DC Statehood, DFA was particularly excited to work this year alongside its DC-based affiliated group, DC for Democracy, in support of Ed Lazere and Jeremiah Lowery's bold progressive challenges of sitting incumbents for Council Chair and one of the At-Large seats, respectively.

DFA also proudly supported three Council incumbents -- Brianne Nadeau, Charles Allen, and Elissa Silverman -- who have proven themselves to be real leaders in the fight for inclusive populist policies that have helped build on DC's history of progressive leadership. In 2014, DFA proudly supported Nadeau and Allen in their successful fights to join the Council.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those we're following in today's primary elections -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Sign the petition: DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen must resign NOW

The whole world is witnessing the outrageous and cruel impact of Donald Trump's new "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

This horrifying family separation policy is opposed by 67% of Americans, according to a new CNN poll -- and it could be revoked by Trump and Secretary Nielsen at literally any time.

But instead of doing the morally right thing by choosing to end the routine separation of immigrant families, this morning Secretary Nielsen tripled down on the policy. She refused to apologize for the harm she's causing to immigrant children and families, claiming that "illegal actions have and must have consequences."

That is an unacceptable answer -- and it proves that Nielsen is unfit to hold her current office. Sign our petition calling on Secretary Nielsen to resign from the Department of Homeland Security immediately.

Democracy for America endorses Ilhan Omar for U.S. House in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Ilhan Omar in the race to replace progressive champion Keith Ellison as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District.

DFA has 22,942 members in Minnesota and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to strongly back Ilhan Omar in her race for Congress in the MN-05:

"State Representative Ilhan Omar is not only the ideal leader to build on Keith Ellison's progressive legacy in the U.S. House, she'll be a history-making trailblazer with the steel-spine needed to fight for the inclusive populist reforms Minnesota working families deserve.

"Democracy for America is particularly thrilled to endorse Ilhan Omar for Congress because of the base-building, enthusiasm-harnessing grassroots campaign we saw her run for her State House in 2016 where she increased voter turnout by a staggering 37%. Minnesota's 2018 races for governor and multiple races for Senate will likely be won or lost in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, making Ilhan Omar's tested and proven ability to energize, excite, and mobilize voters a critical asset for continued progress on racial and economic justice in Minnesota.

"Democracy for America members are excited to stand with Ilhan Omar because we know she'll be a transformative, inclusive populist champion in Congress and a critical leader in the victories Minnesota's progressive voters need to have this fall and in the years ahead.

"Ilhan Omar will be more than a vote in Congress, she'll be a voice for the progressive policies and priorities that people in her district and across the country need in Washington." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Ilhan Omar -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Minnesota State Rep. Ilhan Omar is the highest ranking Somali-American, Muslim woman elected in the United States. Despite staring down racist, sexist and xenophobic attacks, Omar won her state house race in 2016 with 80% of the vote and increased turnout by 37%. Currently serving in the Minnesota Legislature as the Assistant Minority Leader, Omar is also the Director of Policy & Initiatives for Women Organizing Women, an organization committed to engaging and empowering East African women to take civic leadership roles and see themselves as leaders within their communities. Born in Somalia, Omar's family fled the country's civil war and spent four years as a refugee in Kenya before coming to the United States in the 1990s. If elected, the mother of three will not only be a stalwart champion for criminal justice reform and Medicare for All, she'll make history as the first Muslim woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.

VICTORY: DFA revels in Ammar Campa-Najjar win in California’s 50th Congressional District

This afternoon, the Associated Press declared Ammar Campa-Najjar the winner of one of the top-two spots in the race to flip California's 50th Congressional District to Democrats in November.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Campa-Najjar primary victory in the CA-50:

"Ammar Campa-Najjar won a top-two spot in this critical primary race because he ran a campaign not beholden to Washington insiders, committed to an inclusive populist agenda focused on big ideas like Medicare for All, and welcomed in the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters Democrats need to transform the country.

"The simple reality is that red districts like California's 50th District aren't going to be won by candidates running on stale Republican-lite ideas or campaigns that continue to focus everything on trying to swing ever dwindling numbers of 'persuadable' center-right voters. Having a bold, visionary candidate like Ammar Campa-Najjar in California's 50th District gives us more than a fighting chance in tough terrain, and we couldn't be more excited to fight alongside him all the way through November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA excited by Kevin de León top-two finish in California U.S. Senate primary

This morning, the Associated Press declared Kevin de León the winner of one of the top two spots on November's general election ballot in the race for U.S. Senate in California.

Democracy for America (DFA) was a strong, early supporter of de León's campaign for U.S. Senate after endorsing him on the day he entered the race in October 2017.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Kevin de León winning a ticket to the general election for U.S. Senate in California:

"With his top-two finish in the primary, Kevin de León overcame moneyed interests and a political establishment dead set on destroying his campaign before it even began, ensuring that Californians have a bonafide champion for their progressive values on the ballot for U.S. Senate this November.

"For generations, California has been a national leader in the fight for social, racial, and economic justice, which is why Californians deserve a champion in the U.S. Senate committed to fighting for bold progressive ideas like Medicare for All, not someone who has to be challenged in a primary to start aligning with their progressive values.

"From his work as a young community organizer battling the anti-immigrant Proposition 187 to his leadership in the push for a bold single-payer healthcare plan in the California State Senate, Kevin de León has spent his life fighting for justice for Californians. As California's next U.S. Senator, Kevin de León is prepared to confront Donald Trump's hate-fueled agenda and help Democrats put forward a bold, inclusive populist vision for the country in the years ahead.

"That's why we were excited to endorse Kevin de León's campaign on the day he entered the race last October, why we look forward to fighting alongside him until November, and why we can't wait to help him make history as the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate." -- Jim Dean, Chair Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA cheers Mike Levin’s primary win in California’s 49th Congressional District

Early this morning, Mike Levin won one of the top-two spots in the race to flip California's 49th Congressional District to Democrats in November.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Mike Levin's primary top-two victory in the CA-49:

"Darrell Issa retired because he was afraid of facing a candidate like progressive Mike Levine who's capable of uniting Democrats with his commitment to confronting Donald Trump's hate-fueled agenda and running a campaign driven by inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All, comprehensive immigration reform, and a robust commitment to environmental protection that inspire voters who haven't traditionally turned out in non-presidential elections.

"Democracy for America members were excited to support Mike Levin in his primary, are thrilled about his victory this evening, and can't wait to help him defeat his right-wing, Trump-apologist opponent this November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Katie Porter's primary top-two victory in California's 45th Congressional District:

"Katie Porter's top-two victory in this primary means that voters in California's 45th Congressional District now have the candidate best equipped to defeat Mimi Walters in November, and a fearless champion for progressive values to cast their ballot for this fall who is committed to fighting for inclusive populist reforms like Medicare for All.

"Democracy for America was proud to have Katie Porter's back in this primary, and we couldn't be more excited to continue fighting for Orange County working families alongside her through November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

June 5 Primaries: DFA watching California U.S. Senate, U.S. House, key District Attorney races

While today is one of the largest primary days of the 2018 cycle, much of the country's eyes, including Democracy for America's (DFA), are on the races in the bright blue, progressive state of California.

Today, DFA is paying particularly close attention to California's primaries for U.S. Senate, five U.S. House races that will be critical to helping Democrats retake the chamber in November, and six key fights for District Attorney essential to the battle for criminal justice reform in the state.

DFA-endorsed federal and local candidates running in competitive primary elections today include:

  • Kevin de León (U.S. Senate - CA)
  • Bryan Caforio (U.S House - CA 25th)
  • Sam Jammal (U.S. House - CA 39th)
  • Katie Porter (U.S. House - CA 45th)
  • Mike Levin (U.S. House - CA 49th)
  • Ammar Campa-Najjar (U.S. House - CA 50th)
  • Diana Becton (Contra Costa County District Attorney)
  • Dean Johansson (Yolo County District Attorney)
  • Geneviéve Jones-Wright (San Diego County District Attorney)
  • Patrick Kolansinski (Stanislaus County District Attorney)
  • Noah Phillips (Sacramento County District Attorney)
  • Pamela Price (Alameda County District Attorney)

DFA is also backing two incumbents, Ro Khanna (U.S. House - CA 17th) and Maggie Toulouse Oliver (Secretary of State - NM), in two less competitive primaries taking place today.

Even before he becomes the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate, Kevin de León, who DFA endorsed in October of 2017, has proven critical to pushing five-time elected Senator Dianne Feinstein to new positions on the death penalty, the legalization of marijuana, and confronting Donald Trump's hate-fueled agenda more aligned with California's progressive voters.

In the races for U.S. House, DFA members been fierce advocates for Elizabeth Warren-ally Katie Porter in her fight for Congress in California's 45th District and have strongly supported Bryan Caforio (CA-25), Sam Jammal (CA-39), and Mike Levin (CA-49) since late 2017. More recently, DFA backed Ammar Campa-Najjar (CA-50) who's put up a strong fight as an inclusive populist champion in a traditionally Republican district.

In April, DFA launched it's "Criminal Justice Reform Champions" slate now with eleven endorsed candidates nationwide including six District Attorney candidates in California like Pamela Price, who is running for DA in Alameda County as a champion for police accountability and bail reform.

VICTORY: DFA revels in Ortiz Jones’ victory in run-off in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District

Gina Ortiz Jones just won the Democratic primary runoff in Texas' 23rd Congressional District.

Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Ortiz Jones' campaign for congress in January.

DFA's Jim Dean on Gina Ortiz Jones's victory in the Democratic runoff in Texas' 23rd Congressional District:

"As an Air Force veteran, a member of the LGBTQ community, and a first-generation American, Gina Ortiz Jones will not only blaze a new trail as the U.S. House's first Filipina-American, she'll bring the critical lived experiences of many of the people that the Trump administration is seeking to marginalize to Washington's corridors of power

"We were thrilled to support Gina Ortiz Jones throughout the primary, and Democracy for America members in Texas and across the country are excited to do what we can to ensure she beats her fringe-right, Trump-enabling opponent in November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA celebrates Abrams victory in GA Gubernatorial primary!

Stacey Abrams just won Georgia's Democratic gubernatorial primary -- and one important step closer to becoming the country's first African-American woman to lead a state as governor

A proud early backer, Democracy for America (DFA) encouraged its members to pledge their support for Abrams ahead of a potential run in May 2017 and formally endorsed her on the day she entered the race for governor weeks later.

DFA's Jim Dean on Stacey Abrams's victory in Georgia's gubernatorial primary:

"Stacey Abrams' victory tonight is an incredibly important win for the grassroots movement that rose up behind her in this primary and a Democratic Party that is, in many ways, still searching for a way forward after the crushing losses of 2016 and the outdated, Republican-lite playbook that caused them.

"Democracy for America enthusiastically endorsed Stacey Abrams on the day she launched her campaign, not only because she'd make history as our country's first Black woman governor. We eagerly backed Stacey Abrams because she was committed to running a race that would definitively prove that when Democrats run a bold, progressive, people-powered campaign around our shared values, we can expand the electorate, restore faith in our democracy, and win.

"We're excited to continue fighting along Stacey Abrams in the general election and helping carry the message across the country that Georgia Democrats sent with her victory tonight: Progressive women of color, like Stacey Abrams, are standing at the fore in the battle against Trump's GOP, and if we get behind them and follow their leadership, we've got a clear shot at fundamentally transforming our country this November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

In the lead up to today's primary, DFA members made 4,866 individual contributions totalling $48,328 directly to Abrams campaign (avg. contribution $9.93), hosted a DFA Campaign Academy with dozens of top local leaders organizing ahead of the final push, and made 41,667 calls to Georgia voters during the GOTV phase of the campaign alone.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 36,259 members in the state of Georgia and more than 1 million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism.

Since 2004, DFA members have raised and spent more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

Sign Robert Reich’s petition: Let Medicare and Medicaid negotiate lower drug prices

Donald Trump's new drug plan omits the critical step needed to truly reduce prices: Taking on Big Pharma.

In 2003, Big Pharma got a U.S. law prohibiting the government from using its considerable bargaining clout under Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate lower drug prices.

During his campaign, Trump promised to reverse this law. But the plan he revealed Friday doesn’t touch it. Trump’s plan seeks only to make it easier for private health insurers to negotiate better deals for Medicare beneficiaries.

In reality, private health insurers don’t have anywhere near the clout of Medicare and Medicaid -- which was the whole point of Big Pharma’s getting Congress to ban such negotiations in the first place.

To truly reduce drug prices in America, we need to release Big Pharma’s stranglehold on the U.S. government.

Sign Robert Reich's petition with Democracy for America calling on Congress to allow Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate lower drug prices.

Democracy for America endorses candidates for Lt. Governor in Wisconsin, Hawaii, Rhode Island

National progressive group backs Barnes (WI), Green (HI), Regunberg (RI) in critical state contests

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of three candidates running for Lieutenant Governor in states across the country --  Mandela Barnes in Wisconsin, Josh Green in Hawaii, and Aaron Regunberg in Rhode Island.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 1 million members across the country and 44,023 in Wisconsin, 8,571 in Hawaii, and 7,310 in Rhode Island.  These progressive candidates are DFA’s first endorsement for Lt. Governor in the 2018 cycle and join the endorsements of seven gubernatorial candidates and now 12 total statewide non-federal candidates the organization has made ahead of this year’s elections.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s endorsement of three progressive choices for Lieutenant Governor:

“All across the country, Lieutenant Governors play a critical role on the front lines of the fight for progress, whether they functioning as the leader of a legislative chamber, head of a Department of State, or standing in for the absence of a Governor.

“We’re excited to announce Democracy for America members’ full-throated support for three progressive leaders running for Lieutenant Governor in their respective states: Mandela Barnes in Wisconsin, Josh Green in Hawaii, and Aaron Regunberg in Rhode Island.

Mandala Barnes is not only a hero in his home state of Wisconsin for his work championing progressive economic policy, criminal justice reform, and healthcare in the State Assembly, since his tenure in office he’s been a national leader in the battle for gun violence prevention and the building of progressive power in the nation’s state capitols.  Democracy for America members are thrilled to support Mandala in his race to become the Badger State’s next Lieutenant Governor, because we know he’s committed to making sure Wisconsin works for working people once again.

“One of DFA’s very first endorsed candidates in 2004, Josh Green has a proud history as a progressive fighter in Hawaii’s State House and Senate and DFA members are thrilled to be supporting Josh once again.  As Lieutenant Governor, we trust Josh to be a champion for Hawaii’s working families and ensure the Aloha State continues to be a national progressive leader.

“In Rhode Island’s State Assembly, Aaron Regunberg has proven himself to be an unwavering champion for inclusive populist priorities like raising the state’s decades-old tipped minimum wage and leading the fight to establish earned sick days.  Aaron will not only work to end the kind of backroom dealing that distorts Rhode Island’s progressive politics, as Lieutenant Governor, he’ll help lead the battle for a Medicare for All-style healthcare and better access to reproductive health services.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

DFA’s endorsed candidates for Lieutenant Governor are an important part of its long-running “Purple to Blue” project, a multi-year effort dedicated to winning state House and Senate chambers across the country. In 2017, DFA’s Purple to Blue project helped elect 27 inclusive populist leaders to state legislative chambers across the country; ran an independent expenditure campaign for a Washington State Senate candidate that was instrumental in helping flip the chamber; and fiercely backed Justin Fairfax in his effort to become Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor and State Senate President.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those it’s endorsing for Lieutenant Governor today -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

DFA backs Liz Watson for U.S. House in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Liz Watson in her effort to defeat fringe right Republican Trey Hollingsworth and become Indiana’s 9th Congressional District’s next member of Congress.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization’s decision to strongly back Liz Watson in her general election fight:

“Democracy for America could not be more thrilled to endorsed Liz Watson for Congress because she’s building a campaign rooted in progressive values and backed by the kind of broad-based coalition of progressive and working-class supporters it takes to win in Southern Indiana.

“By building a campaign focused on Medicare for All, raising wages, and making prescription drugs more affordable, Liz Watson is not only running on the inclusive populist priorities that are critical to supporting working families in Indiana’s 9th district, she’s showing other Democrats across the country that we win when we stand up and run fearlessly on our shared progressive values.”  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has 35,004 members in the state of Indiana and more than one million members nationwide.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Liz Watson -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Liz Watson on receiving DFA’s endorsement in her race for Congress:

"I'm honored to receive this endorsement from Democracy for America. We are building a grassroots, people-powered movement in southern Indiana to take back our district from a carpetbagger from Tennessee who is using Congress as his own personal cash register. Our Congressman is a multimillionaire who bought his seat in Congress, and as his reward, gave himself a $4.5 million tax cut by passing the tax scam. Hoosiers have had enough of politicians who line their own pockets instead of investing in their communities.

“Hundreds of volunteers with our campaign have knocked thousands of doors as part of our Knock Every Door campaign to reach out to our friends and neighbors about getting the representation we deserve. We've crisscrossed our district holding town halls to hear from voters about the issues that matter most. We are organizing in our communities, one neighborhood at a time -- around kitchen tables, in coffee shops, in senior centers, and everywhere in between.

“I'm so proud to partner with Democracy for America, an organization that builds grassroots, progressive movement for change.  It's time for Congress to start listening to us, instead of to their wealthy donors. I want to go to Congress to fight for an Indiana that works for every single one of us -- for Medicare for All, funding for treatment for the opioid crisis that is tearing families apart, to protect our public schools from privatization and for living wage jobs, and investments in infrastructure and training that will help hardworking Hoosiers finally get ahead." -- Liz Watson

Liz Watson is a working mom and a workers' rights attorney. She's a fifth-generation Hoosier who is sick and tired of hardworking Indiana families struggling to keep their heads above water in today's economy. Throughout her career, Liz has fought for working families to get their fair share, and she's fought back against a rigged system that works only for the wealthy and well-connected. From representing working people in low-wage jobs who were cheated out of their paychecks to serving in Congress as the Labor Policy Director for the House Democrats, Liz has fought to rewrite the rules of our economy so that they work for the people who actually do the work. She led the staff team that developed the $15 minimum wage bill in the House, fought for legislation to strengthen organizing protections so that working people would have the freedom to come together to fight for their fair share, and worked on legislation championed by Senator Warren to end unpredictable schedules in low-wage jobs that leave families living paycheck to paycheck.

VICTORY: DFA celebrates Paulette Jordan’s history-making win in Idaho Gubernatorial primary

Paulette Jordan just won the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Idaho -- and is on her way to becoming as the first Native American in U.S. History to lead a state as governor.

Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Jordan’s campaign for Governor in March.

DFA’s Jim Dean on Paulette Jordan’s victory in Idaho’s gubernatorial primary:

"When insiders tried to shut down Paulette Jordan’s campaign down before it even began, she ignored the naysayers, ran a campaign firmly rooted in progressive values, and now is on her way to making history as the country’s first Native American governor.

“Paulette Jordan’s victory in Idaho’s gubernatorial primary is a testament to her tenacity, her willingness to confront the powerful corporate interests who have controlled Boise for decades, and the broad-based inclusive populist coalition Democrats need behind them in Idaho and across the country to win this Fall.

“We were thrilled to support Paulette Jordan in the primary and we couldn’t be more excited to help her and the grassroots movement behind her make history in Idaho in November."  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

May 15 Primaries: DFA closely watching ID Gubernatorial, PA U.S.House & State Legislative races

While Democrats have a number of exciting races across the country tonight, Democracy for America (DFA) will be paying particularly close attention to the Democratic primaries for Governor of Idaho and numerous races for U.S. House and the State Legislature across Pennsylvania.

DFA-endorsed statewide, federal, and state-legislative candidates running in today’s primary elections include:

  • Paulette Jordan (ID - Governor)
  • Greg Edwards (US House - PA 7th)
  • Jess King (US House - PA 11th)
  • Sara Innamorato (PA House - District 21)
  • Summer Lee (PA House - District 34)
  • Malcolm Kenyatta (PA House - District 181)
  • Elizabeth Fiedler (PA House - District 184)
  • Joyce Judy (OR Senate - District 11)

If elected in November, Paulette Jordan (whom DFA endorsed in March) would make history as the first Native American governor in the country and Idaho’s first woman governor.  Federally, Greg Edwards race in Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District, which in addition to securing DFA’s support has also been endorsed by Bernie Sanders, has garnered a great deal of local and national attention.  Jess King is also a favorite of local and national Democracy for America members, although she’s running unopposed in today’s primary in Pennsylvania's 11th Congressional District to take on vulnerable Republican Lloyd Smucker.

DFA’s endorsed state-legislative candidates in Pennsylvania are a part of its long-running “Purple to Blue” project, a multi-year effort dedicated to winning state House and Senate chambers across the country.

DFA Press Release

DFA, PCCC back Balter (NY-24), Campa-Najjar (CA-50) to flip two key swing districts

Today, the Democracy for America (DFA) and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) proudly endorsed bold progressive congressional candidates Dana Balter (NY-24) and Ammar Campa-Najjar (CA-50). Both candidates would flip red districts blue with their victories in November, and could possibly be the swing district to take back the House for Democrats.

Statement from DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots group endorsement of Balter and Campa-Najjar:

“In too many districts across the country, the DCCC still doesn't understand that candidates who run on stale Republican-lite ideas and campaigns that continue to prioritize ever dwindling numbers of 'swingable' center-right voters actively hurt our chances of assembling the lasting majority we need in Congress.

“After all, a Democratic victory in 2018 isn't just about retaking Congress --  it's about seizing control with a lasting majority that is deep, bold and visionary enough to win the even bigger, inclusive populist victories we need in 2020 and beyond.

“We are thrilled to be endorsing Dana Balter and Ammar Campa-Najjar today because they remain unbroken by the party insiders in Washington and are running the kind of bold, inclusive populist campaigns that will win in November, welcome in the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters, and help transform the country.” --  Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America.

Statement from PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor Chair on the PCCC’s endorsement of the two candidates:

“Let’s elect game-changing progressives in the blue wave that’s coming -- progressives are going to compete everywhere and they’re going to win.

“The Republican Party’s attacks on working families have opened up opportunities for Democrats to win in places they haven’t won in decades, and it’ll be essential for Democrats to embrace a bold, economic populist message in these districts. The DCCC is increasingly hurting Democratic chances to win swing districts by actively recruiting anti-choice, corporate Democrats who act like Republicans.

“We’re endorsing Dana Balter and Ammar Campa-Najjar because they’re authentic, inspiring progressives who will fight for workers and against big campaign donors who rig the tax laws to benefit themselves.” -- Stephanie Taylor, PCCC Co-founder

Dana Balter is a professor and progressive community organizer who is running a bold campaign on Medicare for All, higher wages for workers, and closing the Trump tax loopholes for big corporations and billionaires. Balter is running in a district Clinton carried by nearly 4 points in 2016, but rather than focusing on taking down Republican incumbent John Katko with a strong, progressive candidate, the DCCC recently recruited a primary opponent who is anti-choice to try and knock Balter out of the race. This is on top of a series of recent actions by the DCCC to chase away progressive candidates in primaries across the country, including Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, and California.

Ammar Campa-Najjar is a former aide in the Obama Department of Labor who has a strong history fighting for working families. Campa-Najjar is running a pro-worker campaign focused on Medicare for All, higher wages for workers, and real investment in infrastructure to create millions of jobs.

More about the Candidates

Dana Balter (NY-24). Dana is running to flip the congressional seat held by Republican John Katko. She’s professor, community organizer, and she’s also a lifelong advocate for people with disabilities, starting with her beloved younger brother Jonathan. She’s running for Medicare for All, women’s rights, universal pre-K, and higher wages. A conservative candidate who identifies herself as “secretly pro-life” was just recruited to run against Dana in the primary -- we need to have Dana’s back! Her primary is June 26.

Balter on DFA & PCCC Endorsement: “I just wanted to meet my Congressman to talk about healthcare. But John Katko wouldn’t meet with me, and he won’t meet with a lot of the people he represents. That’s why I decided to run for Congress. Members of the PCCC and DFA know how important it is to have representatives who will show up and listen. Representatives who will stand up to entrenched power and stand up for the people. They know how grassroots support can make a difference, and how much we need it in the fight against the Trump agenda. I’m honored and proud to have their support.”

Ammar Campa-Najjar (CA-50). Ammar is the son of a Mexican-American mother and Middle Eastern immigrant father, born and raised in East San Diego county. He helped support his struggling family by working as a church janitor in high school, working his way up to a position in the White House during President Obama’s administration. He developed an apprenticeship program at the U.S. Department of Labor to “earn while you learn,” and is running for Medicare for All, immigrant rights, and overturning Citizens United. He’s running to flip the congressional seat held by Republican Duncan Hunter. His primary is June 5.

Campa-Najjar on DFA & PCCC endorsement: “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of two national progressive organizations today, Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. CA-50 Voters are galvanized more than ever by the opportunity to bring an end to the 40-year Duncan Hunter dynasty; they’re ready to elect a people-powered candidate that has stood up for working families, universal healthcare, women’s rights, common sense gun reform, debt-free college and diplomacy abroad. I’m thankful for these critical endorsements and look forward to working with both organizations to make history this election.”

DFA: “Blood is on Trump’s hands” following Iran Deal withdrawal, “underscores stakes of [2018]...”

Momentarily, Donald Trump is going to isolate the United States diplomatically by announcing his decision to withdraw the country from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).

Democracy for America (DFA) has been a strong, grassroots supporter of President Obama's diplomatic breakthrough with Iran since it was first made in 2015.

Here's a statement from DFA Chair Jim Dean on Trump's disastrous withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal:

"Donald Trump's decision to remove the United States from an agreement that was actively preventing Iran from creating a nuclear weapon makes our country less safe and vastly increases the likelihood that his cabinet full of war hawks pushes us into yet another cataclysmic conflict in the Middle East.

"Let's be exceedingly clear: Donald Trump and the fringe-right Republicans who have worked to dismantle this deal from day one now own every single consequence of this decision. From the deathblow the destruction of this deal has delivered to the United States' credibility in diplomatic negotiations to the disastrous war with Iran it is designed to necessitate, the blood is on Donald Trump's hands.

"If anything, Trump's decision to kill the Iran Deal only underscores the stakes in this fall's election. With the Trump White House apparently dead set on diplomatically isolating the United States from its allies and provoking a conflict with Iran, a Democratic majority in Congress committed to halting any rush to war may be the only shot we have to avoid repeating the disaster in Iraq." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA backs Cynthia Nixon for Governor of New York

Democracy for America (DFA) today announced that it would be endorsing progressive activist and actor Cynthia Nixon in her race to become the next  Governor of New York.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the grassroots progressive group’s decision to endorse Cynthia Nixon in New York’s race for Governor:

"Democracy for America is thrilled to announce our endorsement of Cynthia Nixon, the real progressive in the race for Governor of New York.

"For 17 years, Cynthia Nixon has been a leading voice and on-the-ground fighter for public education, women's rights, LGBTQ equality, and protecting New York’s environment from corporate polluters.

"Cynthia has brought that same unrelenting zeal for bold ideas and bottom-up change to the race for Governor.  Over the last month, she's started building a strong grassroots campaign across New York state that is not only putting forward the inclusive populist agenda that's driving the debate but engaging the coalition of young voters, voters of color, and women she needs to win the primary.

"Governor Andrew Cuomo is clearly rattled and that's why New Yorkers are seeing him scrambling to push out progressive reforms after working for years with Republicans and fake Democrats to block them.

"But let's be clear: Cuomo only acts like a progressive when he's being challenged by powerful progressive women capable of defeating him.  New Yorkers aren’t going to be fooled by Cuomo’s new “progressive” dog-and-pony show.

"With Cynthia Nixon, the proudly progressive state of New York finally has the chance to have a governor in Albany who shares their values in the battle for racial and economic justice --and DFA members across the state and nationwide will stand side by side with her in this fight." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA has 150,027 members in the state of New York and more than one million members nationwide.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Cynthia Nixon -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Cynthia Nixon on receiving DFA’s endorsement of her New York gubernatorial race:

"I am very grateful to receive this endorsement from Democracy for America. DFA knows that campaigns are built from the bottom-up -- through grassroots canvassing, phone-banking, and fundraising. I am excited to work with DFA in building a progressive movement here in New York."  -- Cynthia Nixon

As governor, Cynthia Nixon would fight for a progressive agenda in New York by supporting policies to provide health care for all, legalize recreational marijuana, end mass incarceration, and take corporate money out of politics.  Cynthia believes the state should take more proactive and aggressive measures to protect New York’s immigrant communities, and that New York should be at the forefront of protecting our environment by transitioning New York to 100% renewable energy.

Nixon is the seventh gubernatorial endorsement DFA has made in the 2018 election cycle.  Other gubernatorial endorsements the national grassroots progressive group has made this cycle includes Stacey Abrams in Georgia, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, David Garcia in Arizona, Andrew Gillum in Florida, Ben Jealous in Maryland, and Paulette Jordan in Idaho.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and spent more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA endorses Rashida Tlaib for U.S. House in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Rashida Tlaib in her race to become the next member of Congress from the Democratic stronghold of Michigan’s 13th congressional district.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the decision to back Rashida Tlaib’s race for Congress in Michigan’s 13th congressional district:

“Rashida Tlaib is a courageous progressive leader and unrelenting champion for Detroit’s working families that our country needs in Congress.

“When millionaires, billionaires, and corporate interests try to silence her, Rashida Tlaib refuses to back down from her mission to make life better for working class people. Rashida took on the Koch brothers when no one else would, and got them to remove their toxic waste from the Detroit riverfront. And, when Donald Trump held a campaign rally at a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club, Rashida stood up and got tossed out for demanding that he read the U.S. Constitution.

“Democracy for America members are thrilled to endorse Rashida Tlaib, not only because she’ll make history as the first Muslim woman in Congress, but because we can’t wait to see what her fearless tenacity brings to fights for critical inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All, criminal justice reform, and a $15 minimum wage.”  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has 68,405 members in the state of Michigan and more than one million members nationwide.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Rashida Tlaib -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Rashida Tlaib on receiving DFA’s endorsement in her race for Congress:

"The families of Michigan's 13th district and I are building a people-powered movement to retake our government from wealthy corporate bullies who control the Republicans.  I'm so grateful to have the support of Democracy for America, a truly grassroots organization that knows that our big progressive ideas can come to life when we organize our communities and empower residents to become activists for their futures.  We are knocking tens of thousands of doors across this district because we know that working people are hungry for courageous representatives who will take on the entrenched powers to get meaningful change, and we're proud to have DFA by our side." -- Rashida Tlaib

Rashida Tlaib is a former member of the Michigan State House who made history as the first Muslim woman to serve in the state legislature and championed efforts to restore state funding for numerous social services.  Since being term-limited out of office in 2014, Tlaib has lead local efforts that forced the Koch brothers to remove pollutants for the shores of the Detroit River and required a comprehensive cancer study in the shadow of Marathon Oil’s refinery expansion. A native Detroiter, Tlaib is committed to continuing her work knocking down the barriers to real change when elected Congress.

Tlaib is just Democracy for America’s third 2018 endorsement in Michigan.  Last week, DFA endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s race for Governor and, in late January, the grassroots progressive political organization backed Fayrouz Saad for Congress in Michigan’s battleground 11th congressional district.

DFA calls on Hoyer to step down from House leadership following secret recordings

This morning, THE INTERCEPT released audio of Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking Democrat in the House leadership, actively trying to push a progressive candidate out of Colorado’s 6th congressional district primary.

DFA's Executive Director Charles Chamberlain responds to this explosive tape by calling for Steny Hoyer's resignation or removal from House Democratic leadership:

"The secret recordings of Steny Hoyer trying to push a grassroots progressive candidate out of a race for Congress exposes the work Hoyer has done for years actively undermining progressive power in Congress and ensuring the Democratic Party is filled with elected officials who are politically incapable of standing up to the corporate interests who profit off the country's growing racial and economic inequality.

"If Steny Hoyer wants to continue carrying water for greed-driven corporate interests in Congress, that's his choice, but he doesn't represent the future of the Democratic Party or the interests of the people of color and progressive white voters critical to retaking the House in November.

"We saw what happens when Democratic Party leaders put their fingers on the scale in primaries in 2006 through 2016, when we lost nearly 1000 elected offices up and down the ballot.  Steny Hoyer likes to spend a lot of time talking to progressive candidates about electoral viability but, after his exposure in these recordings, it's time for him to recognize that only thing that's truly not viable is his leadership role in a House Democratic caucus that depends on an enthusiastic grassroots progressive base for its majority.

“Steny Hoyer should resign or be removed from House Democratic leadership immediately.”  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

It’s particularly notable that Democratic leaders like Steny Hoyer, along with corporate-funded New Democrats, are hurting the chances of Democrats taking back the House by supporting candidates who oppose popular ideas and won't help inspire more Democratic voters to turn-out in November.

Recent polling conducted by our friends at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in swing districts like KS-3, W1-1, CA-45, CA-25, CA-49, and NJ-3, and all across the nation show that bold ideas like Medicare For All, expanding Social Security, debt-free college, and challenging big corporations like Big Pharma are tremendously popular.

Democracy for America endorses Abdul El-Sayed for Governor of Michigan

Democracy for America (DFA) today announced its support for Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s hotly contested race for Governor.

DFA has 68,405 members in the state of Michigan and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the grassroots progressive group’s decision to back Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Gubernatorial primary:

“Democracy for America members could not be more excited to endorse Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and the historic, people-powered campaign he’s running to become Michigan’s next Democratic Governor.

“Abdul is not only objectively running on one of the most fearlessly progressive, inclusive populist gubernatorial agendas in the country, he’s energizing grassroots voters and building the kind of bottom-up campaign Michigan Democrats need to win up and down the ballot in November.

“One of the reasons why we felt it was particularly important to speak out and endorse Abdul in Michigan’s race for Governor right now is because a multi-millionaire pharmaceutical executive is currently spending millions of dollars on cutesy TV ads to hide his past support for Republicans and fraudulently win the backing of progressives despite his blatantly rudderless politics.

“From the development of his bold urban and rural policy agendas to the grassroots organizing his team is doing in every corner of the state, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is doing the work to earn progressive support in Michigan’s race for Governor and that’s why I’m pleased to say he has Democracy for America’s endorsement.”  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Abdul El-Sayed -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

El-Sayed is the sixth gubernatorial endorsement DFA has made in the 2018 election cycle.  Other gubernatorial endorsements the national grassroots progressive group has made this cycle includes Stacey Abrams in Georgia, David Garcia in Arizona, Andrew Gillum in Florida, Ben Jealous in Maryland, and Paulette Jordan in Idaho.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed on receiving DFA’s endorsement in his race to become Michigan’s next Governor:

“Democracy for America has been leading the fight for justice, equity, and sustainability in our politics for the past 14 years. I am proud to walk this path with them to lead on our values in a Michigan that is hurting for universal healthcare, a livable wage, workers’ rights, and clean water. Together we will walk for our future."  -- Dr. Abdul El-Sayed

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is running for governor to make state government work for all Michiganders, and not just the privileged few. Abdul is a Rhodes scholar, physician and public health expert who, as Detroit’s health commissioner, launched a program to ensure every child who needed one got a free pair of glasses. Abdul is running on a platform of bold, progressive ideas to address the gaping inequality between the rich and poor, including raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, passing Medicare for All to guarantee health care as a right, and making college tuition-free for families earning less than $150,000 a year.

DFA on SYRIA STRIKES: “While Trump likes to play authoritarian, it’s Congress” who decides on war

In response to Donald Trump’s announcement this evening of military strikes against Syrian military targets, Democracy for America’s Executive Director Charles Chamberlain released the following statement:

"Once again, Donald Trump and the war hawks running his administration are making America less safe by throwing us into the civil war in Syria without any sort Congressional approval.

"While Donald Trump certainly likes to play the part of an authoritarian, we still have a constitution that clearly states that it's Congress, not Presidents, who decide when we go to war.

"The unfathomable level of human suffering and the atrocious use of illegal chemical weapons in Syria can only be stopped with the political solutions created by robust, creative, and sustained international diplomatic effort.

"It's long past time for Congress to step up, exercise its constitutional authority, and make certain that Donald Trump doesn't drag us into a great power conflict-fueled civil war in the Middle East in an attempt to distract us from the growing cloud of scandal and corruption surrounding him here at home." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America.

As the organization noted last year following similarly ill-conceived military strikes in Syria, DFA has long demanded careful consideration and congressional consultation concerning the use of military force in Syria.

DFA says Paul Ryan’s reelection retreat shows Dems the inclusive populist path to “lasting majority”

Reports broke this morning saying that House Speaker Paul Ryan has decided not to run for reelection.

Democracy for America has been a strong supporter of Ryan’s Democratic opponent, Randy Bryce since June 2017.

Here’s a statement from DFA Chair Jim Dean on Paul Ryan’s retreat from a reelection fight and what lesson Democrats need to learn from it:

“Paul Ryan’s decision to pull the ripcord on his reelection is a direct response to the failed Trump agenda he’s tried to advanced, the growing possibility of a 2018 Democratic Tsunami,  and, most importantly, the insurgent, inclusive populist campaign that Randy Bryce has built over the last 10 months that has directly threatened his chances of holding on to his seat in Wisconsin.

“The lesson for Democrats from Ryan’s retreat is simple: If we support candidates like Randy Bryce who run on their progressive values, push for bold inclusive populist ideas, and build people-powered campaigns that inspire new communities of voters to take action, we not only have a shot at retaking Congress in November, we have an opportunity to build a lasting congressional majority that’s equipped to fight for the big, courageous progressive reforms our country so desperately needs.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Sign the petition: Tell regulators to stop the Sinclair-Tribune merger now

Sinclair Broadcasting has been covertly forcing its local stations to broadcast pro-Trump propaganda -- and now they want to take over one of the most influential media companies in the country.

Millions of local TV news viewers heard eerily similar versions of this Trump-esque speech from dozens of seemingly unrelated news anchors across the country:

“The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.”

“Some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias.”

“This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.”

The source of the script was Sinclair Broadcasting -- the country's largest broadcaster, which owns 193 television stations and 589 channels in 89 markets.

Over the weekend, a Deadspin video which edited together anchors from coast to coast reading Sinclair's propaganda went viral. And that's not the only way that Sinclair is using its power to advance a radical agenda. The New York Times has reported that the company sends its stations "must-run" news segments that are full of fear-mongering and pro-Trump rhetoric.

No corporation should have the ability to subvert journalistic standards and deceptively disseminate right-wing spin like this. It's bad for our democracy. But if Sinclair gets their way, things will only get worse.

Sinclair is currently trying take over Tribune Media, which would give them ownership over 42 new stations in key markets including New York, Washington D.C, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department have slowed the deal down, but they could give it the green light at any time.

We need to take action now if we're going to stop the right-wing radicals at Sinclair from gaining even more control over our media. Sign our petition calling on the FCC and the Justice Department to kill the Sinclair-Tribune merger now.

Take Action!
