Alderman - 2nd Ward
Jose Ramirez made Berwyn his home in 1999, with his partner Tom. He has two teenage sons who he is very proud of. Jose is committed to creating a Berwyn that engages and welcomes all residents with a city government that answers to the voters. A long-time resident, Jose has been active in the community—supporting local businesses, the arts, and Berwyn schools. Jose Ramirez is well known for his many contributions in south Berwyn, in particular the Depot District, where he co-owned and operated the popular and successful Over the Rainbow ice cream shop.
As the child of immigrants, Jose’s parents instilled in him the importance of education. Jose takes an active role in our schools, currently sitting on the board of the South Berwyn Education Foundation, which has raised over a $1 million for District 100 schools. He also previously served as a member of the District Advisory Committee for Educational Excellence in District 100.
Putting his degree in computer science to good use, Ramirez helps manage a multinational software support helpdesk for a national stock exchange. Ramirez has worked on the Berwyn Development Corporation’s Special Events Committee to help organize art shows that showcase local Berwyn artists and Oktoberfest in the Depot District and was a founding member of the Depot District Merchants Association where he served as president for many years. He is a former board member of the 16th Street Theater and a member of the Berwyn Historical Society.
