Public service is not a job for Cincinnati City Councilwoman Yvette Simpson, it’s her calling. She understands the very different perspectives of the city of Cincinnati because she has lived in two very different Cincinnatis: the seven hills of Cincinnati and the valleys beneath. She can represent the whole of Cincinnati, and that’s exactly what she wants to do.

Growing up in Lincoln Heights, Yvette faced many challenges that could have easily quashed her relentless enthusiasm. Born to a mentally ill mother and drug addicted father, Yvette was raised by her grandmother in public housing. Her family struggled to make ends meet and many friends and family members dropped out of school or fell prey to in criminal activity. Yvette looked past her challenges and decided at the age of eight she wanted to become a lawyer. It didn’t matter to her that no one in her family had ever attended college. Yvette has always understood the power of hard work, dedication, and focusing on the future. She became the first in her family to graduate from college at Miami University, and achieved her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. She also developed and directed Miami University’s first Pre-Law Program. In 2014, Yvette earned her M.B.A. degree from Xavier University.

Yvette is currently serving her second term on Cincinnati City Council. She chairs the Human Services, Youth, & Arts committees and serves on several others, including the Budget & Finance committee. She is also using her time on city council to help Cincinnati’s most vulnerable populations through collaborative efforts with departments with the City of Cincinnati, nonprofit, and community organizations. Through these efforts Simpson has been strategic in fighting human trafficking, creating a comprehensive youth study on Cincinnati’s youth population and implementing a pilot jobs program to help the city’s homeless population transition to a more stable life.
