Matt lives in the North End of Middletown with his wife Sarah, an attorney, and their dog Lucy. As the son of an immigrant and the grandson of a refugee, Matt is committed to preserving Connecticut’s long tradition of tolerance and inclusion.

In 2008, Matt ran for State Representative against a long time Republican incumbent. After knocking 5000 doors, Matt won in a major upset and became Connecticut’s youngest serving legislator.

Since then, Matt has been a strong progressive leader in the Connecticut General Assembly. A cancer survivor, Matt is leading efforts to protect the Affordable Care Act in Connecticut and provide everyone with access to paid family and medical leave. Matt believes in protecting the middle class. He wrote the nation’s first Student Loan Bill of Rights, took on Wall Street to protect retirement security for public school teachers, and co-authored legislation that kept fracking waste out of Connecticut. He has been a champion for democracy and voting rights and has led numerous efforts to protect and expand the right to vote.
