For Consuelo Martinez, the mission is clear: unite the City of Escondido. This is evident in the work she started back in 2004 when her then-city council wanted to enact anti-immigration policies. As a direct result, she began her fight by forming local human rights groups that focussed on grassroots organization and immigrant advocacy. A Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), Leadership North County, San Diego Leadership Alliance and Emerge California alumna, and current Leadership Development Specialist with Mid-City Community Advocacy Network, Consuelo has given her everything into supporting her Latino community. So much so, that in 2014 Consuelo challenged the very 16-year incumbent that implemented the anti-immigrant policies that sparked her movement nearly a decade prior.

A longtime resident of Escondido County, California, Consuelo has lived through less-than-progressive times which inspired her to make a change in her community. Consuelo says she doesn’t see herself as a politician though, instead, she sees herself as a neighbor who knows the city’s potential. As a representative of Escondido’s forgotten neighborhoods, Consuelo wants to lift up the voices of her neighbors and those residing within them who have since been ignored. An inclusive leader, not a politician, Consuelo Martinez wants to give a voice to her community once and for all.
