Virginia Senate, District 7
Susan retired as a Navy Master Chief (E9) after 25 years of active duty. She was stationed at Andrews AFB, NAS Oceana, North Island, Point Mugu; in Spain and Puerto Rico; on board carriers Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt during both Gulf Wars. Susan worked the flight-deck/flight-line; signed aircraft safe for flight; was leading Senior Chief for over 300 on a carrier; and the Command Master Chief with over 400 Sailors and Marine Corps instructors and 19,000 students.
Two governors have appointed Susan to the Virginia Board of Veterans Services.
And during the 2019 Legislative Session, she served as Legislative Aide to Delegate Convirs-Fowler, assisting her with her legislative agenda, interacting with and assisting constituents with any concerns they needed addressed, and interacting with stakeholders who had thoughts about legislation.
She is the youngest of four children. Susan was raised in Cleveland during the tumultuous 1960s race riots. As a teenager she lived in the Cleveland suburbs, experiencing the nastiness of others as a mixed-race child using music to break barriers. At 16, Susan and her mother moved to Philadelphia where she graduated from high school. I completed a BS in Computer Information Systems, Cum Laude, and an AS in Paralegal Studies, Summa Cum Laude.
After retiring from a 25-year career in the Navy, she decided to make Virginia Beach her home. Susan knew she needed to give back to a community that had given her so much, so she volunteers with numerous community service organizations.
She was Chapter Chaplain, Vice-Chair Service for Veterans, and emcee of the annual Flag Day Celebration with Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered as a tutor at Woodstock and Centerville Elementary Schools and at Brandon Middle School. Susan is a choir member, lector, and former catechist at her church. She volunteers helping prepare taxes for any community members who need her services. And she is a longtime volunteer and officer in the Virginia Beach Democratic Party.
