Aimy is a former Spanish teacher, K-12 school principal and mother. She has been married for 21 years to her husband, Michael, who is a pastor in Concord, NC. Born in Texas, Aimy moved to Japan at a young age when her father’s service in the Army relocated them. In 1993, she moved to North Carolina, where she graduated high school and went on to attend UNC Chapel Hill for 3 years, before transferring to UNC Charlotte, where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees along with a Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Urban Education. Currently, Aimy owns a consulting firm that helps students gain admission to college and obtain scholarships to pay for their education. Last election, Aimy came within less than 2,000 votes from unseating a Republican incumbent and flipping House District 82.

Aimy’s decision to run for office came when politicians in Raleigh passed a law requiring smaller class sizes but provided no additional resources to fulfill the requirement. She knew that her background and career in public education was valuable experience that could be put to use improving our state’s education system, as well as serving as a voice for all hardworking North Carolina families. She knows that the most change to the NC state education system will take place in the State House.

In the legislature, Aimy will fight for teachers and students to lift North Carolina’s public schools from among the bottom in the country back to the position of a leader in the South. She knows that we must pay our teachers and support staff as the professionals they are and provide every school with the resources they need to ensure all North Carolina children can attend class in an equal environment that encourages learning. As a former teacher and principal, Aimy has worked tirelessly to equal the playing field for all students by ensuring her STEM school had the best resources: a Robotics team, coding and programming programs, and grants to support the vision of preparing traditionally marginalized students with the best opportunities.

She also knows that we must do everything we can to lower the cost of health care across the state. This is why Aimy supports expanding Medicaid as well as finding unique ways to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. This practice is evident in her work with the Jack and Jill of America Foundation to offer health fairs in local communities of color to bring them valuable testing and screening services to prevent the onset of chronic diseases and provide early detection.
